12.30 "Painters - Posters and Postcards" David Hutchings
David will be known to many as an author, the originator of fine books on the QE2, two ships called ‘Caronia’ and the Cunard Queens. He has been a keen surveyor of the changing scene in Southampton over many years and occasionally lectures at sea. David will present in this talk a view of how liners and liner trades have been portrayed in publicity posters and postcards with some stories of those portraying them. For many of us a postcard is the closest we are likely to get to owning a great work of maritime art. Come along to see how that card you just bought came about and learn a little about the person who made the image.
14.00 “Cruising Just Got easier” Matt Sudders Much speculation surrounded the launch in 2005 of Stelios’s new easyCruise venture. What would it be like? What was this all about? Our intrepid – as it turned out – reporter Matt Sudders selflessly set out to the French Riviera to find out. He filed his report at the Society’s June meeting. Anyone who was there will probably want to sit again through one of the most hair raising and hilarious talks that we have enjoyed in living memory. And if you are one of the great majority of shipping enthusiasts at today’s show who was NOT there then you have the chance to catch up with a real treat! Unmissable as pure entertainment, even if you really have no interest in how Stelios spent a small fortune downgrading a super-luxurious ship into … well, best for Matt to explain!
