A party of 33 members met at the new cruise terminal at Avonmouth for a visit on board the Cruise and Maritime cruise liner DISCOVERY. This visit would be the first ship visit of the 2013 season. The port of Avonmouth had not been visited by cruise ships for over 20 years until Cruise and Maritime began operating here in February 2013. The terminal used for cruise ship passengers is the Fresh Goods berth situated at S berth. Complimentary tea and coffee was served to us in an adjacent facility while we waited to board the ship and after we were all assembled we proceeded to security and were soon checked in.

DISCOVERY is a classic ship not at all like the floating resorts increasingly seen at Southampton and other cruise ports. She was completed in 1971 by Rheinstahl Nordeewerke at Emden in Germany as the ISLAND VENTURE and together with her sister ship SEA VENTURE was chartered to Flagship Cruises for service between New York and Bermuda. The following year she was chartered by Princess Cruises and renamed ISLAND PRINCESS keeping that name until 1999. Her sistership under the name PACIFIC PRINCESS was featured on television in 1970’s television programme The Love Boat which introduced many Americans to the world of cruising. In 2002 she became part of the Voyages of Discovery fleet and was renamed DISCOVERY. In 2013 retaining this name she transferred to the Cruise and Maritime fleet replacing the OCEAN COUNTESS.

Once on board our large party assembled in the Reception area situated on Deck 4 (Bali Deck), where we all received a welcome pack containing information on the ship and the company from our two shore based Cruise and Maritime guides Jodie and Lyndsey. Our tour commenced on Deck 5 (Pacific Deck) which is devoted to the shopping arcade and cabin accommodation. From the shopping arcade a good view of the spacious reception area was obtained, plenty of seating and interesting wall decorations.

We then continued upwards to deck 6 (Riviera Deck) where the main entertainment facilities and bars are situated. First stop was the Carousel Lounge where the DISCOVERY entertainment team perform their evening shows and where daytime lectures and presentations also take place. Seating in this lounge is slightly tiered affording a good view of the entertainment on offer unless a pillar is in your way.

Situated amidships is the Discovery Theatre now used as a cinema and also as a venue for classical recitals, this venue is flanked on the port side by the photo galley and on the starboard side by the Palm Court for viewing the sea. The Hideaway bar situated on the port side is a small enclosed quiet bar during the day but at night becomes the centre for jazz and disco music. Further aft is the Discovery Lounge and Bar which during the day hosts presentations and is also place to chill and listen to music of all kinds. A well stocked library and book exchange complete the internal facilities on this deck. Outside is the Waves bar and a small pool.

For her size Discovery has a very varied selection of cabins ranging from inside two and three berths to some spacious suites and we had a chance to see all grades during our tour.

One of last ports of call on our tour was the Atlantis Spa and Gym which by the look of it had been recently refurbished and was situated on two levels. Finally we arrived on Sun Deck and viewed the Lido and buffet areas of the ship which are protected from elements by a sliding magrodome. The Yacht Club is also situated on this deck from which during the day fine views ahead can be had and at night doubles as an alternative restaurant to the Seven Continents which we now made our way to for lunch. On our way to the Seven Continents Restaurant situated on Deck 3 (Coral Deck) we noticed that carpeting was being renewed in some of the cabins and on arrival on Coral Deck we were told that the carpet outside the restaurant was to be re-laid before the ship sailed that afternoon as part of the ongoing refurbishment being carried throughout the vessel.
Shortly after being seated the Captain arrived to welcome us to the ship. We then enjoyed an excellent five course lunch at which the wine flowed freely. After coffee we sadly had to leave this happy ship for home before the DISCOVERY departed for Liverpool and her next cruise. Thank you Peter for arranging this visit and to Cruise and Maritime for allowing such a large party of OLS members to visit DISCOVERY.
